@ Little Village

Led by Denny Richards, Dayvyd Lunch is an ever-evolving, improvised, ambient noise ensemble–exploring the sonic edges of our tattered world; always with warmth and consideration
This era of KL!NG features a duo format with Elly Hofmaier and Lex Leto, two musicians as committed to the known allure of structured songs as they are to the sonic beauty of the unknown. Or, as they might put it: art rock basement candy with harmonies to tickle yer insides.
Featuring Laura Conway + Ben Donehower + Rachel Yoder
@ Little Village
An expanded multi-disciplinary cinematic performance and conversation on the practice of failure between filmmaker Laura Conway and multi-instrumentalist Ben Donehower, moderated by writer Rachel Yoder.
John Glab (aka Glab II) conjures hypnotic, ambient soundscapes. On his self-titled release, Glab offers a hazy reflection of the world built upon Omnichord sketches; though it’s the persistent, beautiful synth melodies that stick long after the songs end.
Freegrass culls together a trio of exceptional players–bassist/cellist Blake Shaw, guitarist Dan Padley, fiddler Tara McGovern–with jazz, bluegrass, and avant-garde sensibilities. Their ethos respects tradition while staying hungry as it finds its own voice. For this set, they expand to a quartet with R&B vocalist Alyx Rush
A collaborative performance of VEXATIONS—a speculative-poem exploration of the divide between self and other—by Iowa City-based interdisciplinary artists Annelyse Gelman and Ramin Roshandel, orchestrated live on stage at Public Space One.
Across a range of aliases and projects, bassoonist Gabi Vanek finds comfort in the dark matter of music & sound–unearthing what we know is there but can’t quite see or hear until she’s revealed it. Her oeuvre, experimental and gripping, reflects a deconstructed conservatory, a place informed by tradition as it adapts to the dim chaos of the modern world.
Since their 2015 debut, YOUNGER have explored an adventurous, propulsive sound: arty, punky, and unpredictable. They can thread a thousand ideas into three minutes of rock or take extensive detours on their most-hooky tracks. After a brief hibernation they’re releasing their new album Y3K at this show.
A collaborative performance between former Grant Wood Fellow Johanna Winters and Iowa City interdisciplinary artist Sarah Minor, this live shadow theater performance explores contemporary themes of isolation, longing, landscape, and the gendered experience of aging.
The first glance at a work-in-progress film by Auden Lincoln-Vogel about brothers, weird jobs, mysterious disappearances, and skateboarding.
Featuring: Nora Lange, Sarah Anjum Bari, E. Pia Struzzieri
@ PS1 Close House
A trifecta of delightful literary readings featuring the voices of Two Dollar Radio’s Nora Lange, University of Iowa Nonfiction Writing Program MFA candidate Sarah Anjum Bari, and Iowa City’s own E. Pia Struzzieri.
Evidenced by her work across several projects–including beloved Chicago indie duo Finom–Sima Cunningham’s talents are vast. Her solo record, High Roller, clarifies Cunningham’s position as a remarkable songwriter. She leads an ensemble of starred Chicago players through a collection of exquisite folk-rock: her voice, distinctive and assured, is a central, lasting element in these sometimes dreamy, sometimes searing songs.
Sam Prekop is a solo musician as well as a founding member of the Sea & Cake. For decades he’s been an integral artistic voice in Chicago music scenes, though his reach and influence are global. His solo work often explores ambient and electronic textures with modular synths, drum machines, and other electronics. His latest recording Open Close is another revelation; its atmospheres and melodies projecting hope and exuberance precisely when we needed it.
A true guitar rock band with messy, raw atmospherics always in service of good hooks. Their songs and their sound, very much evolving in real-time, pull ‘90s and early aughts alternative music into our present moment.
Special Menu 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
