Join translators and publishers Will Evans (Deep Vellum & Dalkey Archive & Open Letters), Bela Shayevich (University of Iowa), and Gary Lovely (Two Dollar Radio) for a timely and necessary conversation on the magic and art of translation in literary publishing.

Will Evans is a publisher, translator, and entrepreneur with a knack for finding undertold, outstanding stories and connecting them to audiences. In 2013, Evans founded Deep Vellum Publishing, a nonprofit indie book publisher dedicated to translating the world’s best novels into English for American audiences. Deep Vellum Books followed in early 2016 to serve as a cultural community center with literature at the heart of its programming.

Bela Shayevich is a Soviet American writer and translator. She is best known for her translation of 2015 Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich’s Secondhand Time, for which she was awarded the TA First Translation Prize. Her other translations include Yevgeny Zamyatin’s We and Vsevolod Nekrasov’s I Live I See, which she cotranslated with Ainsley Morse. Her writing has appeared in n+1Jewish Currents, and Harper’s Magazine.
