Often times cover bands can seem trite and uninspiring, but every once in a while, an artist interprets a song and breathes a whole new life into it i.e. Cocker’s “With a Little Help from My Friends” or Aretha’s “Respect.” Along with their adventurous original compositions, this is a specialization of jazz trio The Bad Plus, who are masters of un-ironically deconstructing and reimagining Bowie, Nirvana, Black Sabbath, Stravinsky, and myriad pop and classical inspirations. Their high level of group precision has earned the respect and garnered collaboration with jazz giants Bill Frissell and Joshua Redman. The Minnesota natives utilize rock themes, funk backbeats, odd meters and classical exploration to create live shows that London Jazz News exclaims meld’s “hell-for-leather intensity and slow swelling resonant contemplation” creating the “euphoric fare that The Bad Plus are known for”.
