Preoccupations — the band formerly known as Viet Cong — announced their new name along with a new, self-titled album in 2016. Flood magazine called it one of the best albums of 2016, saying, “Never mind the new name: Preoccupations is a sophomore album in the classic sense, finding Flegel, Wallace, guitarist Daniel Christiansen, and multi-instrumentalist Scott Munro honing in on their established sound while pushing at its edges.”
Pitchfork says, “All the wrestling and strife inside these songs are the musical equivalent of blood blasting through veins and nerves raking skin.” The album is dark and ferocious, but with a certain hopeful energy distilled throughout and lingering on the album’s last track, “Fever.”
