Owen Bones, the nom de plume of Chicago producer Owen Jones, is a name you should know if you don’t already. 22-year-old Bones made waves in early 2016 with his EP Surrender!, a high energy, three-song release featuring guests artists/friends including I’m Thirsty and High. Spotify featured “Stuntman” on its Fresh Finds playlist, skyrocketing the single to the #1 most viral song in the United States for several days. Bones released his first full-length album, Dive Club, in November 2016. A visual/multimedia concept album, Dive Club places equal emphasis on sound and world-building, it’s narrative taking form as a manual for an evil underseas organization while sounding like the music on the final boss battle of an adventure video game.
Bones is an avid diver, diving since he was 12-years-old, and said the album is inspired by lessons he has learned while underwater. “The most important of which is the necessity of exploring the unknown,” he told ReverbNation. “Dive Club as a project is meant to draw a comparison between the experience of a diving, and the experience of exploring the depths of new ideas.”
On Dive Club, Bones borrows from Ratatat, Skrillex, Daft Punk, and Phantogram for a propelling sound fit for the dance floor and head nodding with headphones. The album features guest appearances from Tunji Ige, Mothica, and The Cool Kids, for whom Bones DJs and will open for at Mission Creek Festival.
