Jay Som is the pseudonym of Melina Duterte, a California Bay Area native who composed, arranged, produced, and performed all of her own tracks on the summer 2016 release of her tape, Turn Into.
This fuzzy and slightly uneasy listening experience, is a genre of rock described as “woozy” while Jay Som is often described as “dreamy, bedroom pop” and “endearingly lo-fi but never cliche or trendy,” by her faithful Bandcamp followers.
Pitchfork’s review of Turn Into’s title track sums it up for the unfamiliar saying, “In one sense, it’s a peaceful song: dream pop guitars, percussion as crisp and persistent as hand claps, and Duterte’s soaring Cocteau Twins falsetto. But even as Duterte sings about coming home and light kissing her eyelids, she sounds uneasy—like she’s not quite ready to give into it.”
