Current Joys is the moniker for the music of Nicholas Rattigan. Formally known as TELE/VISIONS, Rattigan started the project through a series of experimental solo shows in Reno, Nevada. Performing with only a loop pedal and half broken guitar, Rattigan developed his repetitive and minimalist style which would go on to create the backbone of his work. In 2012, Rattigan released his first album under the project, Wild Heart, projecting himself into the Bandcamp bedroom-pop scene alongside other artists such as Alex G, Frankie Cosmos or Elvis Depressedly. Since then, Rattigan has released several albums and EP’s which twist and challenge his sound by experimenting with different genres and progressing themes of life, loss and intimacy. Much like Surf Curse, his other project with longtime friend Jacob Rubeck, most of Rattigan’s songwriting inspiration comes from film. By mixing the aesthetics of arthouse films like Tarkovsky’s The Mirror or Cronenberg’s Videodrome with real life experiences and sentiments, Rattigan creates a sense of magical realism and autobiographical storytelling with each one of his albums. Though his range of genre has varied over the years from ’80s nostalgia in Wild Heart to haunting guitar anthems in Me Oh My Mirror, Rattigan’s music is all tied together by a simplicity and humanity that comes from his vulnerable lyricism and minimal songwriting style. Rattigan currently lives in Los Angeles, where he plays a major part of the DIY scene of Southern California.
